Fast Forward...to the Future at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts December 10-12, 2021 Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, 300 S. Broad Street The 50th-anniversary celebration of Philadanco continues during this premiere weekend, when theatergoers can catch works from Vietnam’s Thang Dao, Broadway’s Ray Mercer and emerging choreographer Kathy Smith. Oshogatsu at the Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center December 11-12, 2021 This early Japanese New Year celebration at East Fairmount Park’s authentic house and garden features gorgeously arranged flowers as well as traditional pine and bamboo decorations — plus an exhibition of winter kimono. Oshōgatsu is the Japanese New Year, celebrated on the first day of January. Celebrate an early Japanese New Year this holiday season with Ikebana, flower arrangements and traditional decorations of pine, bamboo, and berries. Displays for the new year’s tea and holiday games will be on view, along with an exhibition of winter kimono. Wear warm socks (we have slippers, too) and enjoy the sparse beauty of the winter Japanese garden. Macy’s continues the tradition of twinkling snowflakes, dancing snowmen and more with a 100,000-light show narrated by Julie Andrews and accompanied by the famed Wanamaker Organ. New for 2021, free performances of the light show take place once daily: at 10:30 a.m. beginning December 1 to 24, 2021 and 11:30 a.m. from December 26 to 31, 2021. November 19, 2021 - January 9, 2022 Kennett Square’s world-renowned Longwood Gardens transforms into a winter wonderland during the attraction’s popular A Longwood Christmas. This year’s display highlights the contrast between fire and ice with a clear blue alpine stream with flocked trees, a waterfall and suspended icicles in the Exhibition Hall, as well as a 22-foot-tall Fraser fir outfitted with flame lanterns and red, gold and amber ornaments in the East Conservatory. Outdoors, expect 500,000 lights glittering in trees, a 200-foot tunnel of light, and spectacular fountains and fire pit flames dancing to seasonal music. Timed tickets are required, so plan ahead!
