Featuring all new paintings, works on paper and two installations, Enclosure explores our world's changing landscape in the face of industrialization and environmental threats. Hargrove’s colorful, abstracted landscapes reside in the 'green belt' between the built world and the untamed wilderness, encouraging us to leave space and take action for the regenerative power of nature. In the Vault project space, the Gallery is proud to feature an installation by fine art photographer Ada Trillo. In Old El Paso, Trillo captures the details of the natural world around their childhood home in the Juarez-El Paso binational metroplex.Enclosure and Old El Paso will be on view from Tuesday, January 30 to Saturday, March 23, 2024. In this relaxing, creative, meditative and quite fun workshop, where no talent or experience is needed, you will learn 4-7 basic Zentangle® patterns. Each structured pattern will be broken down into small steps and what results are beautiful creative and unique images. The night features gallery pop-up talks and guest speakers, soap art making, pay-as-you-go Korean bites and cocktails, and an LGBTQ+/Asian/Pacific-focused dance party hosted by DJ TITO_VIDA. The event (which is pay what you wish) ties into The Shape of Time: Korean Art After 1989, the museum’s latest exhibit and the first major showing of Korean contemporary art in the United States since 2009. When: Through Sunday January 28th 2024 | 10am to 7pm Where: The National - 121 N 2nd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106 In Earth, Sky, Water, artists Mindy Flexer and Michael Williamson reflect on their individual identities and family histories, and a hope for personal and cultural transformation offered by contemplation of our current moment. These collected paintings parse questions of belonging, inheritance, and survival. A sense of interconnectedness between past and present, and among living beings on Earth, suffuses visual spaces which span the distance between what is real and imaginary, what is remembered and what is possible. Written in the early twentieth century, it chronicles a mass rebellion by the Muslims of Xinjiang against the China-based Qing empire from its beginnings in 1864 to the Qing reconquest of 1877 and its aftermath. Its author, Musa Sayrami, was an eyewitness to and participant in the rebellion, and he later became a servant to the state that arose from it: an emirate led by the Central Asian military commander Yaqub Beg. Where: Penn Museum When: Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024 | 11:00 am - 4:00 pm Lunar New Year is observed by various Asian communities, including those of Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Tibetan descent. The festivities traditionally commence with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and conclude 15 days later on the first full moon. Originating as a time for respite from agricultural work and for togetherness with loved ones, Lunar New Year incorporates diverse customs such as feasts, gift exchanges, lantern lighting, and offerings to deities and ancestors. |
