Media and Social Justice When: Thursday, November 30, 2023 | 5:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Where: Annenberg School for Communication, 3620 Walnut St. Media platforms are often optimistically positioned as relatively generative opportunities for social justice campaigns because of lower barriers of entry and heightened visibility. But these opportunities are also often shaped by opposition, contradiction and even violence, resulting in inequitable political-economic and legal infrastructures, misogynistic and racialized media practices and dangerous polarizations. This symposium addresses the contradictory ways in which media platforms can result in intentional or accidental thwarting of social justice, as well as the ways in which media platforms can assist and extend social justice efforts. Raritan Players When: Thursday, November 30, 2023 | 6:15 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Where: Van Pelt-Dietrich LIbrary, Kislak Center; 3420 Walnut St. In this program, the Raritan Players, led by Rebecca Cypess, explore music in private circles in 18th-century Philadelphia--especially in the salon of Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson, hostess of the first literary salon in America. Graeme was friends with professional and amateur musicians, including Francis Hopkinson (signer of the Declaration of Independence) and James Bremner (a Scottish musician and music teacher who had settled in Philadelphia but retained strong connections to Britain), as well as other writers and intellectuals in the mid-Atlantic region. This program features her poetry as well as music from Hopkinson's collections, preserved at Penn, and likely played with Bremner in Graeme's home in the 1760s and early 70s.Top of Form Registration is required. When: Friday, December 01, 2023 | 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Where: Institute of Contemporary Art, 118 S. 36th St. The Insitute of Contemporary Art is proud to partner with Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2023 by presenting Everyone I Know Is Sick, a program of five videos generating connections between HIV and other forms of illness and disability. Inspired by a statement from Cyrée Jarelle Johnson in the book Black Futures, Everyone I Know Is Sick examines how our society excludes disabled and sick people by upholding a false dichotomy of health and sickness. Inviting us to understand disability as a common experience rather than an exception to the norm, the program highlights a range of experiences spanning HIV, COVID, mental health, and aging. The commissioned artists foreground the knowledge and expertise of disabled and sick people in a world still grappling with multiple ongoing pandemics.
