A tree-lighting celebration on Thursday invites residents and visitors to see the tree sparkle for the first time this season with more than 4,000 lights, as well as enjoy entertainment and free giveaways. Take special note of the tree’s custom-made steel base, with designs representing signature Philadelphia landmarks, portions of the city’s skyline and Philly’s diverse neighborhoods. Look for America’s Got Talent singers Bianca Ryan and Dylan Zangwill, Mexican folk dance group Ballet Folklorico Yaretzi, gospel singer Raquel E. Morton Britton, the Trinidad and Tobago Baltimore Steel Orchestra and more. Also on offer: free make-and-take holiday crafts and, oh yeah, the lighting of the attraction’s concolor fir tree. Christopher Columbus Boulevard Visit Philadelphia Holiday Parade Saturday, December 4, 2021 | 5-6 p.m. The all-new Visit Philadelphia Holiday Parade is the city’s first parade celebrating all of winter’s holidays, including Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day and the Chinese New Year. The hour-long event features cold-air balloons, marching bands, floats, dancers and more. The parade kicks off at 5 p.m. and runs along Market Street from 2nd Street to City Hall. Prime viewing locations include Primark and Terrace on Tap at the Independence Visitor Center, both on Market Street. Plus, Wawa will be on hand on Market Street between 2nd Street and 3rd Street with free hot chocolate and coffee giveaways. November 19, 2021 - January 9, 2022 Kennett Square’s world-renowned Longwood Gardens transforms into a winter wonderland during the attraction’s popular A Longwood Christmas. This year’s display highlights the contrast between fire and ice with a clear blue alpine stream with flocked trees, a waterfall and suspended icicles in the Exhibition Hall, as well as a 22-foot-tall Fraser fir outfitted with flame lanterns and red, gold and amber ornaments in the East Conservatory. Outdoors, expect 500,000 lights glittering in trees, a 200-foot tunnel of light, and spectacular fountains and fire pit flames dancing to seasonal music. Timed tickets are required, so plan ahead! The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater Dudes find their cliques, recount their vacations and look forward to the new year. Basketball team captain and resident jock, Troy, discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical that is being led by Ms. Darbus. Although many students resent the threat posed to the 'status quo,' Troy and Gabriella's alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well." Tickets are $8 for people aged 12+. The keynote speaker will be Erin L. Thompson, Associate Professor of Fraud, Forensics, Art Law & Crime, Department of Art and Music, John Jay College, City University of New York.
